Paul in studio
Building the Hout Bay studio
2002
1997-2002
1st Studio in Hout Bay
When Paul started practising his art full-time, he used a small space at his home in Hout Bay to create his pieces. He soon started scaling his artworks, and when he painted the 4 large paintings ‘Food Fight Series’, he had to take the canvasses outside the studio, turn them and bring them in again to work at another angle.
2002-2014
Dream Studio in Hout Bay
In 2002, after having a successful exhibition in Johannesburg, he decided to build his dream studio on the property in Hout Bay. With the design input of designer Aidan Hart, they created a wonderful open space where Paul created for many years. The studio has a downstairs area where Paul would hang his pieces, living with them for some time to see whether the works needed more work or not. Many launches or previews were held in the studio over the years.
2010-2013
Woodstock Studio
In 2010, Paul rented an industrial space in Woodstock, as he needed more space. He immediately started working on huge scale, creating his biggest painting as he moved into the space. One could feel the influence of having so much space on the works he created during the 3 years he works in Woodstock.
2011-2013
New York Studio
During this time, Paul rented a studio space in an industrial building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City. He always dreamt of working more permanently in New York, and this gave him the opportunity of staying for longer and having his own space to create works and invite collectors to view his work. During this time, he did a few charity projects for The Lunchbox Fund, most notably the one-off book with Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
