In the semi-light of a Saturday evening party my eye was drawn to an image hanging on my friend’s living room wall. I didn’t know enough about art to understand why I loved how it made me feel, I just knew that it did. Enigmatic and playful. I was finishing an album at the time and was stuck for ideas about an album cover. What a statement an image like that could make peering from the record store shelves, I thought.
I nervously rang Paul up and was invited to have a coffee with him and Lorette at his Hout Bay home and studio. Meeting Paul was provenance. He was as his art is - generous, honest, passionate and fun.
We agreed that ‘Major Player’ would be the perfect fit for my album.
The record company kicked and screamed, pushing for the clichéd pouty head & shoulders shot but I dug my heels in and got my way. I’m so proud and pleased for my art to have connected in this way with Paul’s - a giant of an artist and a human being. I miss him.
